Sleep Under the Stars Event Guide, 2022

Welcome to Sleep Under the Stars 2022!

The team at Stepping Stone House are thrilled you’ve joined us to raise $1,200,000 to provide safety and support for 48 young Australians facing homelessness.

As well as hosting our first in person event for a while at the iconic Taronga Zoo Sydney, we also invite you to participate from wherever you are by joining our virtual event – we’ll have people joining us from their couches, backyards, verandahs and even the back of their utes, all over Australia and the world!

In the event of rain, we will be in touch with the entire event community on Thursday 13th October.

This Event Guide contains information on what to expect of your Sleep Under the Stars experience on Friday 14 October 2022.

And don’t worry, if you simply can’t participate on 14 October, you can sleep out any time in October 2022.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Parking will be available using the Taronga Zoo Carpark on Bradleys Head Road. We will distribute validated parking tickets on Saturday morning so that you can exit the carpark free of charge.

Public buses operate to the main entrance:

  • The 100 Bus (Mosman to City) operates between Mosman (Taronga Zoo Sydney) and the Queen Victoria Building in the city from early morning until around midnight, seven days a week. Buses will run every 10 minutes across the day and at least every 20 minutes in the early morning and late at night.
  • The 238 bus route travels between Balmoral Beach, the Taronga Zoo Sydney main entrance and the Taronga ferry wharf on the water's edge for passengers arriving or leaving by ferry.

Taronga Zoo Sydney is also 12 minutes from Circular Quay by ferry. Sydney Ferries services depart Circular Quay every 30 minutes. However please note that the chairlift will not be in operation on the evening of the 14th October and so entry from the ferry terminal will not be possible. Any arrivals by ferry will need to take a public bus to the main entrance.

WHAT DO I BRING?

We recommend that you bring a few things to make your evening as enjoyable as possible:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Sleeping Mat
  • Snacks
  • Decorations for your cardboard shelter
  • A change of clothes and toiletries

There will be food packages of a sausage sandwich (or vegetarian alternative), soup and tea/coffee available for purchase for $15/pack. Drinks will also be available for purchase.

Or you are welcome to bring a picnic dinner, but remember this is a dry event so please do not bring any alcohol.

We’ll also have cardboard, tape and tools available at designated stations on the night ready for you to construct your shelters.

On Saturday morning, we’ll be hosting a BBQ breakfast including vegetarian options for you to enjoy. It’s our way of saying thank you for being a part of the fun!

How does the live event work?

All registered participants of Sleep Under the Stars will receive a link via email and SMS to join the livestream event. For everyone else a link will be shared here to join the live event which will kick off at 8:00pm AEDT Friday 14 October 2022. You will be prompted to register for the webinar. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. No one will be able to see or hear you, so if possible we encourage you to watch on a laptop or cast to your TV so you can watch it all unfold on the big screen!

You’ll hear from our MC’s – Actor and Television Presenter Luke Jacobz and Comedian, Television & Radio Presenter Ciaran Lyons; Stepping Stone House CEO Jason Juretic; and a panel of our inspirational young people you’ve helped in the past and present and youth workers who will share their insights from the coalface. Prizes for the highest fundraisers and most creative shelters will be announced. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with our speakers and the amazing stories and information they’ll be sharing with you by asking questions in a chat field. You are welcome to invite your friends, family and colleagues to join in the presentations.

What do you need to do?

  •  Share the event link with everyone you want to take part – your family, friends, colleagues, even supporters who you think would benefit from joining our event community. The more the merrier!
  •  Post frequently on your social channels and use the hashtag #SUTS2022. We’re on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn so be sure to tag us!
  •  Consider drafting an SMS to your contacts to make a last-minute appeal to boost your fundraising before the announcement of Highest Fundraiser

Other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy!
